Key Highlights: Lorenz Meier’s Keynote
This year’s summit showed a significant jump in attendance and sponsorship compared to last year, reflecting the soaring prestige of the Pixhawk PX4 ecosystem.

The highlight was undoubtedly the keynote by Lorenz Meier, founder of PX4 and CEO of Auterion. Here are the key takeaways:
1. The Three Eras of the Drone Industry
- Early (2013–2014): The consumer market era where DJI dominated and heavy investments from giants like Intel and Qualcomm failed to scale the market as expected.
- Middle (2015–2018): A period of hype for commercial drones (agriculture, delivery), which faced slow scaling due to limited immediate field demand.
- Current: Growth is now driven by essential demand in Defense and National Security. This is a fundamental shift, not just a trend.
2. Auterion’s Strengthened Open-Source Support
With a recent $130M Series B funding and over 30,000 SkyNode units shipped, Auterion is ready to give back to the community. They officially launched an ‘Open Source Task Force’ dedicated to bug fixes, maintenance, and infrastructure improvements beyond just new features.
3. Advice for Developers and Businesses
Lorenz emphasized focusing on Open Standards and reference implementations. He advised businesses to leverage open-source infrastructure while building their ‘Proprietary Differentiation’ on top of it. He concluded by noting that the drone industry has now established a long-term foundation, similar to the early days of aviation.
Conclusion
Lorenz Meier’s keynote signals that the drone industry has entered a full-scale growth trajectory through defense and security sectors. Auterion’s commitment to maintaining and standardizing the open-source ecosystem is a promising sign for all of us.
That’s it for today’s post. Wishing all our subscribers a very Merry Christmas!
